Scam Statistics

The Federal Bureau of Investigation’s Internet Crime Complaint Center (IC3) reported that $16.6 billion was lost to cybercrime and scams in 2024, a 33% increase from 2023. For the past five years, IC3 has averaged more than 2,000 complaints every day.  

According to 2024 Federal Trade Commission data, investment scams topped the list, with $5.7 billion lost; impostor scams followed at $2.95 billion. Text message (SMS) scams resulted in approximately $470 million in losses in 2024, a fivefold increase since 2020. Fake delivery alerts and job scams are among the most common.
 

A 2024 report from the Global Anti-Scam Alliance (GASA) revealed that  scams stole more than $1 trillion over 12 months
